This paper has employed Multiple Linear Regression (MLR), Random Forest (RF), Decision Tree (DT), and K-Nearest Neighbour (KNN) models to predict the age at the onset of childhood obesity in Saudi Arabia (S.A.) and to identify the significant factors associated with it. De-identified data from Arar and Riyadh regions of S.A. were used to develop the prediction models and to compare their performance using multi-prediction accuracy measures. The age at the onset of obesity was linked to several demographic, medical, and lifestyle factors including height and weight, parents' education level and income, consanguineous marriage, family history, autism, gestational age, nutrition in the first 6 months, birth weight, sleep hours, and lack of physical activities. PURPOSE: The aim of this prospective study was to identify the demographic and clinical variations of keratoconus (KC) in Saudi Arabia. METHODS: A self-administered survey was completed by patients in Saudi hospitals. The survey included questions on demographics, educational level, treatment options, dry eye, eye rubbing because of allergy, residence, family history, and consanguineous marriage. RESULTS: Six hundred and forty-eight patients (375 - male, 273 - female; mean age: 26.89 [standard deviation: 7.04] years; range: 11-50 years) were conducted at 13 central hospitals in all 13 administrate areas of Saudi Arabia over a 1-year period. Five hundred and forty-three (83.8%) patients had a secondary school diploma or diploma's degree of education and mostly were from the Aseer and Riyadh regions. BACKGROUND AND AIM: Diabetes mellitus (DM) of both types is a genetically determined disorder and is prevalent in the Saudi population. Furthermore, the rate of consanguineous marriages is also high among Saudis. Therefore, we aimed to determine the prevalence of consanguinity among people with DM and investigate the effect of consanguinity on the occurrence of diabetes at different levels. METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out at the Obesity, Metabolism and Endocrine Center of King Fahad Medical City in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in January 2021. Information on patients' demographics (age, gender), family history of DM, and presence of consanguinity, and degree of consanguineous marriage were collected. Consanguinity was noted among 73 (51.4%) T1DM patients, but T1DM was not significantly related to consanguinity. T2DM was significantly correlated with consanguinity (r=0.132, p=0.004) particularly among patients with a degree of consanguinity as first-cousins for both paternal and maternal sides (odds ratio [OR]=1.151 and 1.476). Gender and positive family history for DM and consanguineous marriage between cousins were significant factors for T2DM. After controlling for gender and a positive family history of DM, consanguineous marriage between cousins from both the paternal and maternal sides remained significant. CONCLUSION: T2DM occurrence increases in presence of consanguinity in the Saudi population. It's unclear whether lowering consanguineous marriages would decrease the prevalence of diabetes or not.”0.95saudi_context_rules_v1

Consanguineous marriage is preferred in many countries, especially by Muslims. Despite the increasing education rate in Saudi Arabia, the prevalence of consanguineous marriage does not seem to be decreasing as quickly as expected. The present study aimed to investigate the current prevalence of consanguineous marriage among educated married adults in Riyadh and to determine the factors favouring it. The second part was about consanguineous marriage and its degree if present, family history of consanguineous marriage and level of awareness of its potential negative impact on offspring. It was found that the prevalence of consanguineous marriage among the participating educated adults was 39.8% and most of these were married to a first cousin. Neither level of education nor age affected the likelihood of consanguineous marriage, but predictors for the practice among the educated participating adults were having a family history of consanguineous marriage, having consanguineous parents and having a personal preference for consanguineous marriage. In conclusion, the prevalence of consanguineous marriage among educated adults in Riyadh was still high in 2018, especially among first-cousin relatives, and this was related to family history and personal preference rather than educational level or age. It is recommended that further research is conducted to assess the level of knowledge about, and attitude towards, consanguineous marriage among adults in Saudi Arabia.”0.95saudi_context_rules_v1

OBJECTIVE: To assess the three key issues for congenital anomalies (CAs) prevention and care, namely, CA prevalence, risk factor prevalence and survival, in a longitudinal cohort in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. SETTING: Tertiary care centre, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. PARTICIPANTS: Saudi women enrolled during pregnancy over 3 years and their 28 646 eligible pregnancy outcomes (births, stillbirths and elective terminations of pregnancy for foetal anomalies). In this study, the burden of potentially modifiable risk factors included high rates of diabetes (7.3%, OR 1.98, 95% CI 1.04 to 2.12), maternal age >40 years (7.0%, OR 2.1, 95% CI 1.35 to 3.3), consanguinity (54.5%, OR 1.5, 95% CI 1.28 to 1.81). Specifically, folic acid fortification (the neural tube defect prevalence was >3 times that theoretically achievable by optimal fortification), preconception diabetes screening and consanguinity-related counselling could have significant and broad health benefits in this cohort and arguably in the larger Saudi population.”0.95saudi_context_rules_v1

The study aimed to explore the attitudes towards consanguinity and its associations with socio-demographic characteristics in a sample of Saudi adults. A total of 386 outpatient waiting-area attendees at King Abdul-Aziz Medical City-Riyadh were included. Participants were asked about their socio-demographic characteristics, attitude towards consanguinity and the reasons behind this. RESULTS: The positive attitude towards consanguinity among the study respondents was 48.1% with 95% confidence interval (42.91-53.33%). Social and traditional culture (59.9%) were found to be the predominant reasons for favoring consanguinity in Saudi Arabia. Evidence against a positive attitude towards consanguinity was noted in respondents who received medical information about consanguinity versus those who had not received medical information (42.3% vs. According to the multivariate logistic model, the odds of a positive attitude towards consanguinity were 2 times higher for males (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 2.2; 95% CI: 1.147, 4.290) and 4.1 times higher in respondents in consanguineous marriages (aOR: 4.1; 95% CI: 2.350, 7.156). The odds of a positive attitude towards consanguinity were 50% less in respondents who received health information on consanguinity compared to those who had not received health information about consanguinity (aOR: 0.50; 95% CI: 0.253, 0.863). CONCLUSION: One in every two Saudi adults favors consanguinity however, Saudi men and women differ in their attitudes towards consanguinity. OBJECTIVES: To describe the characteristics and prevalence of non-syndromic orofacial clefting (NSOFC) and assess the effects of parental consanguinity on NSOFC phenotypes in the 3 main cities of Saudi Arabia. METHODS: All infants (114,035) born at 3 referral centers in Riyadh, and 6 hospitals in Jeddah and Madinah between January 2010 and December 2011 were screened. The NSOFC cases (n=133) were identified and data was collected through clinical examination and records, and information on consanguinity through parent interviews. RESULTS: The prevalence of NSOFC was 1.07/1000 births in Riyadh, and 1.17/1000 births overall; cleft lip (CL) was 0.47/1000 births, cleft lip and palate (CLP) was 0.42/1000 births, and cleft palate (CP) was 0.28/1000 births. Cleft palate was significantly associated with consanguinity (p=0.047, odds ratio: 2.5, 95% confidence interval: 1 to 6.46), particularly for first cousin marriages. CONCLUSION: The birth prevalence of NSOFC in Riyadh alone, and in the 3 main cities of Saudi Arabia were marginally lower than the mean global prevalence. While birth prevalence for CLP was comparable to global figures, the CL:CLP ratio was high, and only CP was significantly associated with consanguinity.”0.95saudi_context_rules_v1

In this study the CHD pattern in children with Down's syndrome (DS) was determined in a Saudi population with a high consanguineous marriage rate and compared with historical cohorts from populations with low prevalence of parental consanguinity. MATERIAL/METHODS: The prospective study was conducted in an open-access pediatric echocardiography clinic in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Parents' consanguinity was documented and 2D echocardiography and Doppler studies were performed after physical examination, ECG, and chest X-ray for each patient. Consanguinity was found in 25% of all parents. The prevalence rate of consanguineous marriages was 51.3% with an average inbreeding coefficient of 0.02265, which is high compared with many other countries. The most important variables affecting inbreeding were the regional background of the family (p < 0.001) and the level of education, which was inversely associated with consanguineous marriage (p < 0.001).
